Amino acids are chemical organic compounds that simultaneously contain a nitrogen–containing amino group (-NH2) and a carbon- and oxygen-containing carboxylic acid group (-COOH). Chemically, they can be distinguished by the position of their amino group in relation to the carboxyl group – if the amino group on the Ca atom is directly adjacent to the terminal carboxyl group, this is called the α-terminal and is designated as α-amino acids.
